Banana Porridge?

On my way to Masjid Sultan, I was hoping Pak Ali would be there. Today is the first weekend to the mosque, and though he did tell me he was there every other night to break fast & do Teraweh, being the weekend, he may have wanted to do it nearer to his place in Eunos.

Yeah!!! He was there! He called me to go over to his common plate to break fast there. But as usual, I was late and needed to do my 2 sunnats first. I did and immediately rushed over. Though we didn't eat from the same plate, we were just beside each other.

I love this guy!!! No one has ever been more encouraging towards me than him! He's really cool! We spoke at great lengths. He is such a sincere person that it's difficult not to like him. Speaking to him really gives me a different perspective to the religion itself. He poured me a cup of tea outside and Su managed to get a glimspe of my buddy. He is my inspiration. Something to look forward to in an environment of strangers. Wow... Life don't get any better than this!

I really enjoy speaking with him. We did Maghrib, Ishr & Teraweh together side by side. For Teraweh, he'll do the full cycle, while I'll only do 8. And each time when I leave, he'll break the line and follow me out! Wow! What a buddy!!! Know what? I think I'll break fast at Kampung Siglap again tomorrow!!! Yippee!!! Too bad he refuses to carry a cell phone!

He tells me of his experiences when he volunteers in mosques. He distributes porridge. He usually volunteers at lesser known mosques, where followers are mostly lower income or poor. This is where he tells he he trains himself to be sensitive. Looking at improvished seems to make our lives look a little more rosy. But it is not without it's pitfalls... or rather tests. Once, there was a man who asked for 2 servings of porridge. As a policy, they only give one pack per person. If you'd like another, you've to queue back up. Makes seems? Well... unhappy, our receipient told Pak Ali that must be all the voluteers keeps some of the food, etc, etc. In all honesty and for the sake of generalising, one could expect this sort of behaviour. Test... it's all a test...

Another incident he related to me (aren't we both like chums now?!), he was supposed to bring back a pack of porridge back for his wife, but ended up with nothing. He gave it away to a woman who came too late. He gave his pack. My god... fuck me! I would've done the same... but his sincerity spoke louder than his words when he described the woman. Sigh... I wished I had the same patience. Come to realise this now. It seems that, upon reflection, I seem to be waiting for an oppurtunity just to lose my temper this fasting month. Lousy, lousy person I am. I deserve nothing. On the flip side, in order to be old & wise... you've gotta first be young & dumb! My consolation for the day!

Went out for coffee with a really nice couple, Rosli & Sheeren. Sheeren, Rosli's wife, is a Chinese convert. A nice and friendly couple. This would be our 3rd time out for coffee after Teraweh prayers. Rosli & I are about the same age. I think as couples with spouses as converts, we get along really well. Hope it lasts though!

I am beginning to enjoy the fasting month now. Too bad it came at this time. The atmosphere and the excitement is so thick with all these people that you can slice it with a kinfe!!!

I am happy and satisfied. I am truly blessed. I wish my life to be filled with such people and I hope to also be likewise to the people that I meet.
